Debian Squeeze LDXE... with a twist Score: Comment Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF Read More...
Linux So I got restless in waiting on LM12 LXDE. I have wanted for awhile to move over to debian but LMDE uses testing.. (I wanted stable.) So what did I do?
You guessed it Installed Debian Squeeze LXDE. but hey thats just plain jane time for some mods right?
Indeed it is! Installed the gnome network manager applet 1st off. but something else I like was missing.... mint fortune! so I copied the mint-fortune from LM9 and put it in debian and copied the /etc/bash.bashrc file in LM9 and tossed it in debian.
I did have to install some LMDE packages (ill let you figure it out) but now LXTerminal now looks as if it came right from LM. Read More...

LinuxMint Vs Ubuntu: A Growth Analysis Score: Comment Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF
Linux When Linux Mint fans trumpeted that it was the most downloaded Linux distro in recent years, the distro was throwing itself open to debate on the ways and mechanisms by which it became the most downloaded or most viewed distro on opensource platform watchdog-Distrowatch.
Linux Mint 11 and now Linux Mint 12 are great versions that have grown in usage, thanks to the continuity, its founder developer Clement Lefebvre offers for Gnome users. While Ubuntu, backed by Canonical’s steady but firm vision of moving towards a ‘touch-based user experience’ for Ubuntu, continued with Unity desktop as default, Linux Mint proved to be a ‘fresh Mint of Gnome’ as it offered what Ubuntu users yearned for- the ultimate, satisfying experience of Gnome platform. Virtual Tour of W1AW Today! Score: Comment Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF
News Join W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, on a virtual tour of W1AW, the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station, the Amateur Radio station at ARRL Headquarters in Newington, Connecticut. Carcia will lead this tour via a live webcast on Sunday, February 12 at 5 PM EST (2200 UTC). Anyone with an Internet connection will be able to watch the tour.
“We want viewers of this live Internet tour to feel as if they are actually at W1AW,” Carcia explained. “If you came to W1AW in person, you would see the same things that we are going to show on the virtual tour: The three operating stations, the W1AW workshop, the transmitter racks that we use to send out our bulletins and use for the code practice transmission, the control console and “Old Betsy,” Hiram Percy Maxim’s personal spark gap transmitter.” Read More

Kubuntu funding cut just one step in Canonical's grand plan Score: Comment Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF
Linux Canonical's withdrawal of funding to the Kubuntu project apparently is not very important to the company's owner, Mark Shuttleworth.
That's one possibility. The other is that Shuttleworth knows that if he tries to explain, the process will follow the familiar routine that has been gone through whenever he has tried to explain things to the FOSS community.
It goes like this: Shuttleworth writes long, verbose piece explaining X or Y; people post comments, lots of them very snarky; Shuttleworth initially stays cool whil responding; after a while Shuttleworth loses it a bit and says "that's the way it's going to be"; people dump on him more and more and finally comments are closed. Lenovo Ordered to Pay €1920 Score: Comment Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF
Windoze A French laptop buyer has won a refund from Lenovo after a four-year legal battle over the cost of a Windows license he didn't want. The judgment could open the way for PC buyers elsewhere in Europe to obtain refunds for bundled software they don't want, French campaign group No More Racketware said Monday.
Stéphane Petrus bought a Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop from French retailer Cybertek in December 2007. The PC had Microsoft Windows Vista and other software installed on it, none of which Petrus wanted, so he sought a refund from Lenovo under a French law forbidding the sale of one product to be tied to the sale of another. In November 2008, the court rejected his request, telling him that if he didn't want to pay for the copy of Windows, he should have returned the PC. Read More

Canonical pulls the plug on Kubuntu Score: Comment Printer Friendly Send to a Friend Save as PDF
Linux Today I bring the disappointing news that Canonical will no longer be funding my work on Kubuntu after 12.04. Canonical wants to treat Kubuntu in the same way as the other community flavors such as Edubuntu, Lubuntu, and Xubuntu, and support the projects with infrastructure. This is a big challenge to Kubuntu of course and KDE as well.
The practical changes are I won't be able to work on KDE bits in my work time after 12.04 and there won't be paid support for versions after 12.04. This is a rational business decision, Kubuntu has not been a business success after 7 years of trying, and it is unrealistic to expect it to continue to have financial resources put into it.
